Let me explain.

we make a product called Alpha Five www.alphasoftware.com which is a RAD tool for building web (including ajax) and desktop database apps quickly against any SQL database - BUT our tool is only as good as the underlying database structure.

If the effort is not put into getting the data structures right - even the best front end/IDE/RAD tool in the world - is not going to be that useful.

Bottom - line - Put in the effort to think through the data structures upfront. If you do that your app development projects will be able to benefit from the really potent front end tools that are emerging. If you dont first focus on the data structures - then all bets are off.
